چکیده

Wood has been successfully used as a bridge material for thousands of years, but before the early 1900’s most structures were built of untreated timber. Protection from decay and deterioration was afforded by using the heartwood of naturally durable species or by covering the structure to protect it from weathering. Although many bridges constructed of un treated timber performed well (some lasting longer than 100 years), the use of untreated timber declined as naturally resistant North American wood species became unavailable in the quantities and sizes necessary for bridge construction. Additionally, it became economically and function ally impractical to cover timber bridges for protection. In spite of the at tractiveness of using naturally durable wood, modem timber bridges must be preservatively treated to obtain adequate performance.

Trading off species protection and timber production in forests managed for multiple objectives

We address a multiobjective forest-management problem that maximizes harvested timber volume and maximizes the protection of species through the selection of protected habitat reserves. As opposed to reserving parcels of the forest for general habitat purposes, as most published works do, the model we present, and its several variants, concentrate on the preservation status of each one of the s...

FRP for Flexural Strengthening of Timber Bridge Beams

The majority of timber bridges in Canada requires flexural and/or shear strengthening to increase their load-carrying capacity in response to the demand to increase the allowable gross vehicle weight. This paper presents an innovative approach for the use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) to strengthen timber bridges. The advantages of this strengthening system are inevitable: fibre reinforced...

Rational maintenance of timber bridges

The present paper provides some ideas about how decisions concerning maintenance of timber bridges should be made in a rational way. First, a brief discussion is provided concerning the evolution of maintenance strategies in general and it is suggested that maintenance of timber bridges should follow a risk-based approach. Then the discussion moves on to the condition assessment of timber bridg...

Portable Glulam Timber Bridge Design for Low-Volume Forest Roads

Improved stream crossings are needed to reduce construction and maintenance costs and reduce the environmental impacts from low-volume forest roads and skid trails. New designs of timber bridges are cost-effective alternatives for portable stream crossing structures. This paper discusses design criteria for portable timber bridges and presents one design for a portable, longitudinal glued-lamin...

Extending the Service Life of Timber Railway Bridges

Times of downturn in economy, tough competition, high costs, and large amounts of capital required for replacements have created growing need for cost cutting measures and for seeking better return on investment. This has also placed an increasing emphasis on maintenance practices to extend the service life of existing railroad bridges. This paper outlines the various factors which playa role i...
